Money figures in the Sumo Kyokai

Y=Yokozuna, O=Ozeki, S=Sekiwake & Komusubi, M=Maegashira, J=Juryo

  1. The Rikishi income

(figures without currency shown are thousand Yen)

Real income begins at Juryo. The new Sekitori, as the Rikishi is called from then on, has a monthly salary. Below are the figures for all ranks.

Year Y O S M J
1992 1800 1497 1077 829 654
1993 1874 1559 1124 868 687
1994 1987 1653 1192 921 729
1995 2107 1753 1264 977 773
*1996 2234 1859 1340 1036 820
*1997 2369 1971 1421 1099 870
 2011 2820 2347 1693 1309 1036

* presuming a yearly increase of 6% as usual

Before 1957, a Sekitori only had his Basho bonus, Mochi-Kyuukin, paid according to accumulated results, also if absent (Kyuujoo). Achievements in his career add permanently to this bi-monthly (now extra) salary of a Rikishi.

Technically, every Rikishi gets 3 Yen at the start of his career and Yen figures are added to this. The result is multiplied by 4000 now, to give the real figure. Only the resulting figures are shown here.
The basis are Kachikoshi points (wins over losses). A record of 9:6 gives three points, 15:0 is 15 points. Makekoshi in subsequent Basho have no influence, only Kachikoshi count.
The correct number of Kachikoshi is not easy to find out for a Rikishi, who has been in Makunouchi for a long time. The difference between the often published overall wins and losses is only correct, if the Rikishi had no Makekoshi in his career, otherwise the number of Kachikoshi points is higher.

Bonus figures for Makunouchi

Things adding to the bonus:

  • Each Kachikoshi point: 2000 Yen
  • Kimboshi (beating a Yokozuna as Maegashira): 40 000 Yen
  • Makunouchi Yusho: 120 000 Yen
    - if a Zensho (15:0): 80 000 Yen extra
  • Minimum figures (thousand Yen):
    1998: Y: 600, O: 400, S: 240, M: 240, J: 160

If the Rikishi has not reached this figure at the time of promotion, he gets the above minimum - and everything adds to it from then on.

If he gets demoted though, he loses what he got at that time. The next time he gets promoted back again, he may once more start with the minimum figure - if he still has not reached it on his own by then.

Sanshoo, being newer than this system, do not add to the bonus.

Special bimonthly Basho allowance for Sanyaku

Nothing for absence (Zenkyuu), 1/3 up to 5 days,
2/3 up to 10 days, full for 11 to 15 days. 1995: Y: 200, O: 150, S: 50
